Hi everyone,
I am a returning list member and just trying to catch up with
discussions and developments.
At University of Chester the Learning Support Service offers study
skills and academic support services, we are linked to the University's
Learning & Teaching Institute and can be found at
http://www.chester.ac.uk/learningsupport/
Our funding is top-sliced, supplemented by Disabled Student Allowance
work.
Our work comprises of:
generic study skills support for all students, embedding study skills
into the academic curriculum, supporting the learning & teaching
requirements of students with SpLDs, supporting the study needs of ESOL
students, finally IT skills development (staff & students).
We run services on our 2 main campuses and at 3 outlying sites.
Embedded provision is provided from our team of qualified tutors who
are linked to named academic schools and departments. They provide
advice and guidance to academic staff who are developing courses, input
into existing modules of study and also advise on specific learning &
teaching issues related to academic skills development.
Collaboration: All Schools & Departments within the University. Staff
in LSS have links to a number of professional bodies. We also provide
two CPD modules at Masters level linked to learning and teaching for
post-16's with SpLDs (these are available to externals - if anyone is
interested).
Staffing linked to study support:
7 p/t tutors (minimum qualif. BDA AST status) equiv to 5.17 FTE
(embedded support & SpLD) - at least one tutor with AMBDA per campus
0.19 FTE languages specific tutor == (all on lecturer grade)
5 p/t study skills advisers equiv to 2.5 FTE (generic study skills
advice) == (all on APTC Scale 5)
0.75 manager, 0.5 administrator
We are also a critical component of the University's strategies linked
to:
diversity & equality,
widening access,
and the current 'hot potato' retention.
I hope this gives you a feel for what we do and who we are.
I would like to know if other institutions have seen a rise in demand
for services. Over the last two years demand for our services has risen
beyond anything we could have anticipated.
Regards
Carol
