The Department of Hispanic Studies & The Institute of Arab and Islamic
Studies at the University of Exeter
First Colloquium on the Cultures of Christian and Islamic Iberia
Exeter, 4-5 September 2006
CALL FOR PAPERS
During the Middle Ages, the Iberian Peninsula witnessed the flourishing of
the three religions of Christianity, Islam and Judaism, and with them the
three learned languages of Latin, Arabic and Hebrew, as well as a variety
of Romance vernaculars, including Galician-Portuguese, Leonese, Castilian,
Aragonese and Catalan. Because of this complex situation, all too often
scholars specializing in one of these fields run the risk of losing sight
of the larger picture. In order to encourage communication, promote
interdisciplinary approaches and provide a platform for joint research, we
are organising the 'First Colloquium on the Cultures of Christian and
Islamic Iberia', and we invite papers on these cultures, their interplay
and development. The Colloquium is not limited to the medieval period, and
any topic with a bearing on the above, such as the diaspora, Moriscos, and
religious history will also be considered.
This initial Colloquium will be held at the Institute of Arab and Islamic
Studies at the University of Exeter on Monday 4th and Tuesday 5th
September. Since this Colloquium also aims to be a meeting-point between
established academics and budding scholars, a small number of bursaries
(covering accommodation and registration fees but not travel costs) will
be made available to postgraduate students offering a paper.
We should be grateful if you could pass along this invitation to any
person you know of working in these fields who might not have received
this circular and who might be interested in attending.
For offers of papers, please send an e-mail to [log in to unmask] at
your earliest convenience.
Best wishes
Dr Juan C. Bayo
Professor Richard Hitchcock
