Subject: Equiano Symposium at University of Birmingham
To: [log in to unmask]
Dear Mailbase members,
I am one of the co-organisers of the forthcoming symposium entitled 'Olaudah
Equiano and Transnational Agency' which will take place here in the
Department
of American and Canadian Studies at the University of Birmingham on Friday
27
October 2006. First of all as a scholar working in this field I would like
to
warmly invite you to this event.
Also, Alan Rice suggested that I contact you in the hope that you might
distribute information regarding the symposium on the Caribbean email
network.
I have posted some information below and have attached a booking form to the
e-mail. In addition to the scheduled speakers, representatives of the
Equiano
project and a member of the Connecting Histories team working on the history
of
abolitionism in Birmingham will also be joining us.
If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to contact me.
Thanks and all the best,
Sara Wood
The Equiano Project, a partnership between Birmingham City Council and The
Equiano Society, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund is planning an
exhibition
at the Gas Hall, Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, 29 September 2007- 13
January
2008.
In light of this event and ongoing activities which seek to explore the
strong
abolitionist tradition in Britain we feel that now is the time to study the
relationship of Equiano and the increased accent on considerations of the
transnational in Area and hemispheric studies.
The one-day symposium, 'Olaudah Equiano and Transnational Agency', will
feature
short position papers by leading international Equiano scholars, including
Vincent Carretta (University of Maryland, author of Equiano the African:
Biography of a Self-Made Man), Chis Apap (University of New York) and
another
speaker to be announced.
The symposium is set for Friday 27 October 2006 and will be held at the Arts
building on the main campus at the University of Birmingham in Edgbaston.
The
symposium will commence with registration between 10.00 and 11.00 am and
will
finish in the early evening.
Enrollment for this symposium will cost £10.00 ($15.00), which includes a
buffet
lunch and refreshments. Spaces on the symposium are limited, in order to
facilitate discussion, so book early to avoid disappointment. (After 20
October
the enrollment will increase to £15 ($30.00.)
Enquiries should be directed to
