This public lecture commemorates one of the founders of the discipline of American Studies in the UK and the first director of the Institute of United States Studies. 

We are delighted that Richard Carwardine, Rhodes Professor of American History at Oxford University, has agreed to give the 2006 Harry Allen Memorial Lecture. Richard’s study, Lincoln, won international plaudits for its new way of looking at its subject and was awarded the 2004 Lincoln Prize (for the finest scholarship in English on Abraham Lincoln, the American Civil war, or a subject of their era), making him the first British scholar to win this honour.
