Dear list members,
Given that in the last several messages have been posting on how to
create maps to be imported into WinBUGS I would like to mention that it
is also possible to use R for that. Recently, a function called sp2WB
was added to package maptools to export maps from 'sp classes' into
Splus format. In the documentation you can find an example using the
North Carolina map and the SIDS dataset.
I know for sure that it is possible to import/export maps in shapefiles,
Arc/Info binary coverages and E00 files, although many more formats will
be supported in the near future.
Notice that it is possible to project the current map, select a set of
subareas, split/join areas, etc. before creating the Splus map for
WinBUGS.
Hope this helps.
Best regards,
Virgilio
P.S: 'sp classes' are a set of classes (included in package sp) that try
to unify the different formats for spatial data available in R so that
the same objects can be used by different packages. You can find more
info at http://r-spatial.sourceforge.net/
