Timely question. Despite what the WinBUGS website suggests, openBUGS is
not a 'generally' viable option for GNU/Linux machines. It will work
*only* if you can use a deprecated threading model (i.e., can use a
LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.1 environment variable). Then, you need (or seem
to) specific flavours of gcc. Finally, its not open source - its written
in a proprietary flavour of Pascal, meaning you can't do much with it
besides upload the zip file, and hope you can get it to work.
Now, some distros maintain support for the 2.4.1 kernel trick, but an
increasing number don't'. Redhat, for example (including Fedora) are
ceasing to backwards support the older 2.4.x kernel (current Redhat and
Fedora use the 2.6.x kernel). I suspect more and more distros will do
the same.
A potentially much better options is JAGS, which I've managed to compile
on my Linux machines, and work through most of the WinBUGS examples
quite successfully. Its a work in progress, but for me, its got great
potential.
Final alternative - get VMWare server (its free), stick a copy of Win2K
or WinXP on it, and run WinBUGS within the VMWare environment (I can't
get it to work under WINE). It works fine under VmWare, with about a
5-10% performance hit on my machines (big multi-Opteron boxes).
