Featuring Yusef Komunyakaa, Edward Hirsch & Cecilia
Vicuna. With special screening of an early cut of the
film. $20 entrance fee, but will get $15 worth of
books. Co-sponsor: Pampero Rum.
Edward Hirsch is the author of six books of poems
including Wild Gratitude, which received the National
Book Critics Circle Award; and For the Sleepwalkers,
which received the Lavan Younger Poets Award from The
Academy of American Poets and the Delmore Schwartz
Memorial Award. Hirsch is currently the president of
the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. Yusef
Komunyakaa is the author of Neon Vernacular: New &
Selected Poems 1977-1989, for which he received the
Pulitzer Prize and the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award and
other collections. His honors include the William
Faulkner Prize from the Universite de Rennes and the
Bronze Star for his service in Vietnam. Cecilia Vicuña
recently exhibited her work at the Palais des Beaux
Arts in Belgium, at the Castello di Rivoli in Italy,
and in the 1997 Whitney Biennial. Her book, Instan
appeared from Berkeley’s Kelsey St. Press, and she is
currently co-editing the anthology 500 Years of Latin
American Poetry for Oxford University.
Alabanza is the story of a poet's attempt to speak for
the silenced and the missing, made in heartfelt praise
of Pablo Neruda and the victims of two September
11ths.
