'READING BYRON': A One-Day Conference

There are still a few places available for the one-day conference on
'Reading Byron' at King's College London on 22 February 2006 jointly
organised by The Byron Society and King's College London. Numbers are
limited, however, so could anyone interested in attending please apply as
soon as possible.
The speakers are: Bernard Beatty (Liverpool); Stephen Cheeke (Bristol);
Gavin Hopps (Canterbury Christ Church); Prof. Philip Martin (De Montfort);
Jonathon Shears (Liverpool); Jane Stabler (St Andrews); Corin Throsby
(Oxford); Neil Vickers (King's College London); Prof. Tim Webb (Bristol).
Topics to be discussed will include: detail and narrative flow in Byron's
poetry; Byron's use of 'common things' and 'the commonplace'; Don Juan's
use of the languages and dialects of the London underworld; new scientific
approaches to Byron's use of the ottava rima and its effects; Byron as a
letter writer; Byron's enjambment and its relation to digression and meaning.
The conference fee is £28 (£23 for Byron Society members, £18 for
