Many thanks to those librarians who have been kind anough to send me
responses to my message of 6th April. I have also been in touch with
individually.
I'd be very happy to receive any more ideas and comments from list members
who may have been on leave when I sent out the first message. In the
meantime here are the main ideas I have received already.
Processes which lecturers respond to generally
* Send out publishers' catalogues to academic staff
* Send out email lists of new books from e.g. Cornerhouse Pubs and ArtsBib
* Set up standing orders for exhibition catalogues e.g from ArtsBib
Means of persuasion if lecturers are not very responsive
* Get the HOD involved
* Allocate segments of your art and design fund to individual programme
leaders and/or programmes within the the curriculum.
* Set deadlines for when the funds must be spent and threaten that unspent
funds will be transfered to other lecturers
* Make use of pressure from students at course committees
Some general comments included the following:
* There are always lecturers who take an active interest in collection
development and some who don't.
* Because of the above, there are always aspects of the curriculum where
the librarian does most of the book selection.
So, if anyone has any other ideas to suggest I should be pleased to receive
them.
many thanks in advance and especial thanks to those librarians with whom I
have already corresponded.
regards
Joan
