Dear Katleen
you could start by having a look at Fritz Schweingruber's (and colleagues) new
book:
Schweingruber, FH, A Borner & E-D Schulze 2006
ATLAS OF WOODY PLANT STEMS: EVOLUTION, STRUCTURE, AND ENVIRONMENTAL
MODIFICATIONS. Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
It's beautifully illustrated, and there are sections on 'Modifications caused by
extreme events' which includes, on page 184, various causes of scars and
traumatic resin ducts: avalanches, landslides, storms, hail, erosion, insects,
trampling, peck marks, etc.
Best wishes
Jill Thompson
