Documentation and Science (CDS)
Conservation Scientist – Vitreous materials. Grade C3C
Scientists at the British Museum undertake research and routine analysis
of materials to investigate the history, technology, deterioration,
conservation and storage of artefacts in our collections. These
scientific activities support the Museum’s wider aims of preserving and
presenting the collections, and the results are disseminated to a wide
range of audiences through reports, publications, lectures and
information in the galleries or web-site.
You will undertake research and other investigations into the
archaeometric aspects of the identification of the materials and
technology of glass and ceramic artefacts, and to address issues related
to their deterioration and conservation. Particular current interests
include the problems of glass deterioration and methods for the removal
of salts from ceramics.
You will have a degree or higher qualification in materials science or a
related discipline, as well as experience in the analysis of vitreous
and possibly ceramic materials e.g. glass, enamels, earthenware,
porcelain, etc. You will also have experience in the application of
