Hi all,
Thank you for all of your suggestions. The reason I want to look at the gas is because the furnace appears to work in a similar way to a gas producer furnace. The archaeogical evidence indicates that the air was coming up from below the charcoal. The crucibles show evidence of two distinct redox zones, a very hot oxidation zone about 3-4 inches above the charcoal, and then a lower temperature reduction zone. The furnace has an side exit flue and forced air through a central tuyer which comes up up through the floor. The furnace was from early Islamic Turkmenistan, and from an area with comparatively limited raw materials, particularly wood. I would like to see if the furnace was producing and then buring hydrocarbons, thus reducing the need for large quantities of charcoal. All suggestions are very welcome. Thanks again.
All the best,
Ann
