*How Does Culture Matter?*
Scholarships in Applied Anthropology in Australia
The Department of Anthropology at Macquarie University, located in
Sydney, Australia, is currently offering two Macquarie University
International Scholarships (MUIS) for its Master of Applied Anthropology
(MAA) program.
*The Master of Applied Anthropology *is a coursework postgraduate degree
with a substantial research element. The degree is intended to help
current and future professionals understand the cultural impacts of and
cultural influences in government and corporate policy. It covers both
the 'traditional' domain of applied anthropology -- development and aid,
public health -- and the applications of cultural understanding and
ethnography in international relations, urban planning, design and
marketing. Graduates are expected to be able to apply anthropological
theory and ethnographic methodology in a wide range of professional
settings, whether community organisations, NGOs, government or corporate.
In addition to coursework units, students complete a supervised research
project on a topic of interest and write a short thesis. This provides
valuable experience in applying anthropological knowledge and methods
while allowing the student to develop expertise that will further their
professional career.
*The scholarships* are available to international students (not
Australian or New Zealand residents or citizens). They cover tuition
fees for the entire three semester program and are valued at almost
$AUD21,000 in waived fees each. They are available for the August 2006
intake only.
Applications will be judged primarily on academic merit, although work
experience and relevance of research interests will also be taken into
account. All international students who apply for the MAA are eligible
to apply for this scholarship, although one will be reserved for a
student from a low income country (as defined by the World Bank).
*Application forms *and additional information on MUIS scholarships can
