I am currently working in Beamish open air museum, and was formerly at
Museum of Welsh Life St Fagans - there were no illuminated signs in any of
the smaller re-erected domestic buildings in St Fagans, though there were
signs (not illuminated) in the grade 1 listed castle (as I recall) - you
might contact Gerallt Nash, head of historic buildings
([log in to unmask] ); here at Beamish there are signs in larger
buildings such as the school; keeping them discreet but visible is the
problem - a lot depends on the attitudes of local fire officers. Have you
contacted the National Trust??

The Tower of London have these signs everywhere too. Health and safety and
history don't often go well together. I used to work in the 13th century
palace as a costumed interpreter, and we weren't allowed to have an open
fire without someone else standing next to it, which was never. It got so
cold that ice formed on the table we were working behind. It was pretty damn
cold, even with a thick wool cloak and hood. I don't think medieval gentry
would have stepped foot in it! We were given an electric oil radiator which
was stuck under the table and looked rubbish.
To be fair, I guess the fire exit signs are designed to be visible in a room
full of smoke, which is why they look so over the top. Lets hope no-one ever
needs to use them :0)
