medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Er, yes, I was kidding (and also alluding in part to Scott Carson's
post of earlier today in the "priestly angels" thread). 'Stole' is
derived from Latin 'stola' and that in turn is a loan word from the
first international Christian language, Greek, where 'stole' (2
syllables; "long" 'e'), also denoting the vestment, is an
ecclesiastical use of an initially broader term
signifying 'raiment', 'get-up','outfit', etc.
best again,
John Dillon
