medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Here's the first paragraph from Cath En:
"Adultery is defined as carnal connection between a married person and one
unmarried, or between a married person and the spouse of another. It is seen
to differ from fornication in that it supposes the marriage of one or both
of the agents."
In the early period, it seems, clergy, including popes, were married.
Whether this was still the norm in 4th c, I don't know. But I'm sure others
will have a more informed response.
