Hi Tim, All
I've been involved in the eduroam global working group that comprises of
reps from Europe, USA, and Australia/Asia. We've been looking at the
eduroam next generation architecture and exploring auto discovery rather
than a hierarchical model and variants of DNSSEC and DIAMETER. We are
working closely with the SALSA-FWNA in the USA.
We are also exploring Shib-eduroam integration and I do recall some
discussion on developing an EAP-SHIB RFC as a longer term goal too.
Tim/Josh and others, I and others around the world involved in both
projects would be keen to know more about the results of this discussion
and if a draft could be sent out I would like to forward this onto the
shibboleth community in Australia (we just launched a national
shibboleth test-bed federation in partnership with MAMS yesterday) and
with the global eduroam working group.
Although not formally stated on the website as yet, we have received
ratification from CAUDIT (Council of Australian IT Directors) on our
national eduroam policy available at

I think this is already happening, and it shouldn't sound like something
'that needs to be started'... James Sankar while with UKERNA was one of
the
driving forces in steering eduroam out of the blocks, and his efforts
were
sterling prior to him leaving for Australia. Indeed the first use of
eduroam was between the UK and the Netherlands.
There is some discussion of what the 'standard' (or tiered) eduroam
services
are (both in the context of JANET and the European work that Nicole
mentioned)
and there are some devils in that detail.
One thing that seemed clear from the work to date is that mandating a
single
solution won't fly; thus the issue of interoperability is very
important.
