Researching workspaces: Ethical challenges in ‘the field’
A session sponsored by the Economic Geography Research Group
Convenors: Stephanie Geary and Raye Ng (University of Liverpool)
The notion of the workspace is significant as a focal point for exploring issues
such as knowledge exchange, communication, and innovation. Yet workspaces
include a variety of environments that raise different and challenging research
issues, specifically in relation to the ethics of research practice. Conducting
research in workspaces poses a number of challenges that the researcher must
negotiate while s/he is in “the field” and when they leave this site. The
session therefore aims to explore the negotiation of ethical issues that emerge
through research into the diversity and complexity of ‘the workspace’, and the
way that these spaces are interpreted and negotiated.
The session will address themes such as atypical or alternative work
environments; relationship building inside and outside the workspace (formal
and informal); negotiating organisational cultures; and the way that the
researcher approaches the ethical issues that these diverse workspaces raise.
We particularly invite papers on the following topics:
• Virtual communication protocols
• Politics of the water cooler
• Researcher participation at corporate events, formal and informal
• Atypical or alternative work environments
• Homeworking
• ‘Talk’ across the work hierarchy
• Alternative research methods in organisations
Key words: Ethics, workplace, culture, relations, researching organisations
Proposed papers in the form of a 200 word abstract (using the RGS-IBG pro-forma
available from www.rgs.org/ac2006) should be submitted to the session convenors
by 31st January 2006.
