medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Appendix III (pp824-59) of Lincoln Statutes is 'A Chronological Table
shewing the rise and decline of Sarum, Lincoln and other English Uses' -
compiled by 'the editor' - I think Christopher Wordsworth, as Bradshaw died
before the volumes were assembled. There may be something of use here (for
example, p 825 refers to 'cir. 680-91. Antiphonarium Benchorense [i.e.
Bangor], ed F.E. Warren, 1893-5'; pp 836-7 have 'cir. 1280-1307. The Bangor
Pontifical of Bp Anian has a set of Episcopal Benedictions composed by J.
Peckham, Abp of Canterbury 1279-92').
You are probably way beyond this level already - and Wordsworth may well be
one of those nineteenth-century editors who changed things to suit his
theories - but it may be worth a look. I phoned Nicholas Bennett at Lincoln
and this volume would have been his first suggestion too. He is aware of a
few fragments of Lincoln Use surviving but nothing substantial and knows
nothing about Bangor. Apparently an Anglican priest called Nicolas Alldrit
is supposed to be writing something on the Use of Lincoln. It might be
worth searching for him through Crockfords. I have a colleague at Bangor
University who may know something more. If so, I'll mail you.
Best wishes
Rosemary Hayes
