Ours is in our Internet Access policy.  We first published this on our web
pages in 2002, and it has proven very easy for everyone for referring to.

Briefly, we only have one very low level of filtering for Internet Access,
that is accessible to anyone once they are 15 or over.  12-14 year olds can
also have direct access to the same once their parents have come in and
signed a permission form.  11 year olds and under have to be with a parent
to access the Internet which is done on the parents card.

For general information, catalogue, homework and internet safety info, we
also provide a small fixed number of ring fenced websites like BBC,
subscription databases (adult and junior), etc

When we issue a library card to someone under 18 the parent or carer fills
in a consent form for them to have the library card.  This includes a
question about whether they want the child *not* to use the computer, and if
so we block their use on our computer booking system, which prevents them
from logging on.

All our computers are configured in the same way with the same filtering.
We have made the computers in the children's area of the central library
more child friendly by the use of Big Key keyboards and child sized mice.

The general question of managing parental permissions for children using the
internet was addressed briefly last year, with only a few responses, and I
was hoping to gather more, as well as some additional specifics, if
possible.

Do you require parental permission for children to use the internet, and if
so how do you keep track of who has permission and who doesn't?  Do you not
require parental permission?  (The 4 areas responding in 2004 all required
written permission, and some required parental supervision of internet use).

On a related note, are your adult and children's computers configured
differently (I'm wondering specifically if you block e-mail or other
communication technologies only on children's computers), and if so, how are
children kept from using adult computers?
