GLASGOW QUINCENTENNIAL CONFERENCE
GEORGE BUCHANAN, POET AND DRAMATIST
26-29 July 2006
2006 sees the five-hundredth anniversary of the birth of George Buchanan, one of Scotland's greatest Renaissance humanists and neo-Latin poets, and a key figure in the educational world in Scotland, France and Portugal. Described by the French printer and humanist Henri Estienne as 'easily the prince of poets of his century', he was also responsible for introducing classical tragedy into France, and his Psalm paraphrases were in use in Protestant circles long after his death in 1582. His pupils included Michel de Montaigne and James VI of Scotland.
In 1906 Glasgow University marked Buchanan's birth with a conference, with its proceedings published in the following year. The University will be similarly celebrating his birth in 2006, in a conference beginning on the afternoon of Wednesday, 26 July. Papers of 30 minutes in length will be delivered on 27-28 July, and the excursion will take place on Saturday, 29 July. Accommodation will be available in the Queen Margaret Residences in the West End of Glasgow.
The conference will focus on three aspects of his writing: the secular poetry, the Psalm paraphrases, and the tragedies. Speakers will include Robert Crawford (University of St. Andrews), Professor Ford (University of Cambridge), Elwira Buszewicz (Jagiellonian University, Cracow), Carine Ferradou (Université de Provence). In addition, it is hoped that there will be a concert of musical settings of some of Buchanan's Psalm paraphrases, a session on the books which he bequeathed to Glasgow University, and an excursion to Stirling Castle, where he spent much of his time in his final years as tutor to James VI, and Killearn, his birthplace, where there is a large obelisk in his memory and where a commemorative lecture will be held.
For further information contact Roger Green ([log in to unmask]) or Philip Ford, Clare College, Cambridge CB2 1TL ([log in to unmask]) Those wishing to book must do so by March 31 2006, and information will be sent to all who express interest. You will be very welcome.
