medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (30. November) is the feast day of:
Andrew (1st cent.) Andrew started out as a disciple of John the
Baptist, moving on to Jesus with his brother Simon Peter. A. rates
several specific mentions in the gospels, but his life is rather
shadowy after Pentecost. Eusebius tells that A. preached in Scythia;
Theodoret says it was Greece. An early medieval forgery claimed that
he founded the see of Byzantium (thus elevating the bishop of
Constantinople to patriarchal status). The idea that A. was
crucified on an X-shaped cross first appears in the tenth century and
didn't become common until the fourteenth. A. is one of the patron
saints of Russia because of a legend that he preached there. His
connection to Scotland is even more iffy---legend tells that St. Rule
brouth A's relics to Scotland in the fourth century at angelic
direction.
Frederick of Regensburg (blessed) (d. 1329) Frederick was born to a
poor family of Regensburg and became a lay brother at the local house
of Augustinian hermits, where he was employed as a carpenter. F. got
a reputation as a miracle-worker, and even received communion from an
angel.
