International Literature Conference
KNOW YOUR PLACE?
Diaspora Literature & the subversion of borders
3-5 November 2005
Goodenough College, Mecklenburgh Sq, London WC1
Postponed in the wake of the 7 July bombings that badly affected the area
around the host venue, ³Know Your Place?² is a timely 3-day international
Conference that brings together a wealth of literary talent from all over
the world in a series of provocative and topical public debates on the theme
of displacement and identity.
Leading writers from Africa, Asia, Latin America and Europe will share their
insights into the human dimension of contemporary mass migration with a wide
spectrum of delegates - including policy strategists, social commentators,
academics and artists - to generate fresh perspectives on one of the
critical issues of our time.
The line-up includes: EVA HOFFMAN (Lost in Translation); EKOW ESHUN (Black
Gold of the Sun); HOWARD JACOBSON (Roots Schmoots: Journeys Among Jews);
AMINATTA FORNA (The Devil that Danced on the Water); RAJA SHEHADEH (When the
Bulbul Stopped Singing); YASMIN ALIBHAI-BROWN (No Place like Home); TED
CANTLE (Building Cohesive Communities); MORIS FARHI (Children of the
Rainbow) - and a host of other diasporic authors from around the world.
Conference themes include: ³Multi-culturalism: a failed experiment?²;
³Memory & Forgetting²; ³Disturbing the Peace²; ³Writing is a Dangerous
Business²; and ³All History is the History of Migration². Full programme
details and conference rates - from £25 for students and bursaries - are
available at www.culturalco-operation.org
The Conference is organized by Cultural Co-operation, an independent
London-based arts charity that promotes cross-cultural contact, dialogue and
understanding, in association with Index on Censorship, the only
international publication devoted to the promotion and protection of freedom
of expression. It is funded by the Ford Foundation and hosted by Goodenough
College.
