Knowledge & Organization Research Seminars at the Vrije Universiteit
Amsterdam, Faculty of Economics and Business Administration
Speaker: Prof. Andrew Webster (University of York)
Topic: Understanding innovative health technologies: where does their
novelty lie?
Date: Thursday, November 24, 2005, 11:00 – 12:30
Venue: Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Room S201
Abstract of the talk:
This presentation will provide a brief introduction to the national
program Professor Webster directs on Innovative Health Technologies as
this comes to its conclusion, to give a sense of some of the key results
that have been recently published. Following on from that, he explores
the meaning of novelty in medical technologies and how this can be
understood from a sociology of science perspective.
Professor Andrew Webster is Director of the Science and Technology
Studies Unit (SATSU), University of York and Head of Department of
Sociology. SATSU undertakes research on the social and cultural
implications of science and technology. His research interests are in
the areas of the sociology of science and technology, science policy
studies, innovative health technologies and their use, the sociology of
innovation, the commercialisation of research, and technology foresight.
He is currently undertaking externally funded research on stem cells and
the implementation of pharmacogenetics and public confidence in
informatics systems. He also has an interest in relating health
technology to context of use and the spatial setting in which this
occurs, which has led to work on ICTs, ageing and the built environment.
