Hi,
As part of the our current technology pilot, we are testing some of
the wiki concept in e-learning. The first development has been a
digital library of learning resources based on the open source Fedora
digital repository.
The repository currently contains a front-end enabling wiki-esque
editing of resource metadata. We are using W3C XForms technology to
prevent user from having to learn/apply the atypical geekish wiki
text-formatting rules and to provide richer UI experience such as
dynamically adding repeatable metadata form element, tabbed-pane and
forms content persistency during edit etc. The form is also
"profile", based on resource type (i.e. "isbn/issn" field on appear
only for book/journal objects).
Another wiki feature is a "resource stub" for various resource types
(incomplete object and requiring further enhancing, reviewing, by
community) - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Stub .
We are also piloting an AJAX feature (http://www.adaptivepath.com/
publications/essays/archives/000385.php) - "subject suggest" similar
to Google Suggest, in which matching and selectable subject headings
appear while users are typing in a keyword.
The testbed (with temporary content) is accessible via: http://
wiki.nesc.ac.uk/read/egee-elearning (bottom of the page), try
searching & selecting an object to see the wiki options. You can also
try to create a new resource stub of various type and edit it via the
form. (The form allows changing type for now.. resource polymorphism?)..
Please note this is a very preliminary prototype and we haven't test
it extensively yet. It may also not able to take on a big load. The
Wiki/XForms options requires Firefox browsers. The suggest feature is
a bit slow c.f. Google but the idea is there.
Current development further wiki option, i.e. delete, file attach and
authentication, cross-searching and resource list services to enable
user to easily append external and internal (repository) objects to a
particular resource such as course/module.
Any general comments or feedbacks regarding any of the above
development would be much appreciated. We would also like to hear
from people working in the same area..
