The Big Blip 05 is a five day festival exploring the creative
potential of combining art, science and technology. It is taking
place in Brighton between Monday 24 and Saturday 29 October 2005
and includes an exhibition, workshops, a club night and an
opportunity for local artists to win a £1000 commission.
The exhibition showcases leading-edge new media work by
international and regional artists at the Brighton Fringe
Basement from Tuesday 25 to Saturday 29 October 2005. This is
open from midday to 6pm and entry is free. The focus is on 'sound
toys': leading-edge interactive audio-visual work that encourages
hands on exploration. These range from digital environments such
as Stanza's digital amorphoscapes and Squidsoup's altzero, to
Paul Granjon's robotic birds and Benedict Sheehan's ghostly
mirror. Both adults and children will enjoy interacting with the
award-winning exhibits.
On Monday 24 October there is a club night of electronica at
Union from 9pm - 1am with Caribou headlining and sets from
electronic pioneer Arovane and audio-visual master Ultre, both
making their Brighton debuts. Stanza, Arcangel and Ivan Abreu,
who are exhibiting work in the exhibition, will be also
performing a live set. Paul Granjon and Tim Exile will be showing
visuals.
Blip has organized two workshops during the festival. Paul
Granjon and Bill Bigge are running a two-day workshop (26-27
October) on practical robotics - participants can build and take
home a solar-powered robot and learn how to program behaviours.
Thor Magnusson, creator of ixi software, will be running a three
day workshop on how to make software environments for music
performance and composition (26 - 28 October). The cost for each
workshop is £10 and limited to 10 places. Email
[log in to unmask] for more details and to register as soon as
possible as almost all the places have been taken.
Lighthouse and Blip are organizing a SpeedDatingWebChallenge: a
networking event for local digital artists on 28th October at
7.30pm in the Brighton Fringe Basement. Jon Bird (Blip), Sue
Gollifer (University of Brighton), and Tessa Lewin (Lighthouse)
will compere the event. Invited participants will be organized
into teams and given time to prepare a presentation based on a
brief handed out at the event. They will then pitch their ideas
to the other groups, which will vote on the best pitch. The
winning team will be commissioned to produce a 'Digital
Miniatures' website and given £1000.
