The following free events might be of interest:
1) "The Activist and the Historian: Paul Stephenson and Madge Dresser.
Talk on Thursday 27 October , 7 - 9pm at Bristol's City Record Office
Paul Stephenson is a civil rights activist best known for the key role
he played in the first black-led civil rights campaign in Britain, in
1963. This was the famous "Bristol Bus Boycott" in which local
African-Caribbean people challenged Bristol Omnibus Company's refusal to
employ black drivers and conductors. Paul will revisit the campaign and
describe what it is like to make history. Madge Dresser of the
University of the West of England specialises in cultural history and
has made a study of this particular event. She will give us the
historian's perspective, over 40 years on. Together they will answer any
questions which people may have concerning this historic moment, which
is significant not only in the history of Bristol and the UK but also in
world history.
The talk is free but needs to be booked in advance. Ring 0117 922 4224
