Arts and Humanities e-Science Scoping Study Research Assistant (part-time
3 days per week)

The Arts and Humanities Data Service (AHDS) is a national service funded
by the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) and the Arts and
Humanities Research Council (AHRc), to collect, manage, catalogue,
preserve and promote the use of digital resources in research, teaching
and learning in the arts and humanities. The AHDS (http://ahds.ac.uk/) is
seeking to appoint a Research Assistant to participate in a scoping study
to discover how existing work in other disciplines can assist the arts and
humanities community in exploiting E-science. Specific project details are
available at http://ahds.ac.uk/e-science.htm

The RA will take responsibility for identifying, collating and analysing
information on e-science projects and outputs, and working with subject
experts to match these against methods and challenges in the arts and
humanities. They will also be responsible for organising and inputting
content into the knowledge base, and make a significant contribution to
its design and interface. This is an interesting and challenging role in
a relatively new area for the arts and humanities. The post would suit a
self-starter interested in the application of advanced technologies to
research processes, methods and knowledge production of arts and
humanities research practitioners.

Salary for this post is at RA 1A point 9, £21,783 - £27,143 pro-rata per
annum inclusive of London Allowance. This appointment is fixed term for
nine months.

For further details and an application form please see our website
http://www.kcl.ac.uk/jobs or the department website
http://ahds.ac.uk/vacancies/index.htm or email [log in to unmask],
or alternatively send a large self -addressed envelope with the post
reference number clearly marked on the outside to the Personnel
Department, King's College London, James Clerk Maxwell Building, 57
Waterloo Road, London SE1 8WA.

Please quote reference number: RA/QJ/149/05
Closing date: 10 October 2005

Research Associate: e-Science Tools and Technology
(Job ref: RA/QJ/153/05)

Research Associate: arts and humanities e-Science methods
(Job ref: RA/QJ/154/05)

A new Arts and Humanities e-Science Support Centre is being established to
support the development and integration of an e-Science programme for the
arts and humanities. Based at King's College London, the Centre is seeking
to appoint two creative and dynamic individuals to work with Sheila
Anderson, Director of the Arts and Humanities Data Service, and Lorna
Hughes, Executive Director of the Methods Network, to set up and develop
the Centre. This post is available immediately.

The key objective for the Centre is to encourage and support new and novel
ways of undertaking research and knowledge creation by utilising and
adapting e-Science concepts, tools, and ways of working for the arts and
humanities. The Centre will provide direct user support, information, and
expertise in order that arts and humanities research practitioners and
teachers can make effective and innovative use of existing e-science
infrastructures. It will match people with the available technology and
support its implementation and use, promote and support collaborative
initiatives and partnerships, and create information papers and case
studies that raise awareness of the possibilities and uses of such
technologies.

This is a relatively new area for the arts and humanities and there is no
ideal person profile. Instead we are looking for individuals who can think
innovatively, be creative and take a leading role in the development and
promotion of this new area for the arts and humanities. This is a unique
opportunity to lay-down an intellectual and strategic framework that will
help to shape the development of an arts and humanities e-Science agenda
for the coming decades.

Applications are welcome from individuals with an excellent understanding
of the use of ICT in arts and humanities research and teaching, or with
experience of grid and computational tools and technologies gained in any
area. More important than background is the ability to assess and
understand the potential of such tools and the grid for research and
teaching use in the arts and humanities, and to translate that
understanding into support. Applications are therefore welcome from
individuals with a variety of backgrounds including computing science,
information science, or an arts/humanities/social science computing
background. An ability to install and test software, identify
functionality and assess that against identified research/teaching needs
would be helpful, as would relevant experience in research and/or
teaching.

To discuss this post further, please contact either: Sheila Anderson,
[log in to unmask]; 020 7848 1981 or Lorna Hughes,
[log in to unmask]; 020 7848 2426

Salary is in the RA 2 range, £29,439 to £34,989 per annum inclusive of
London Allowance; Duration: fixed term until March 31st 2008. For further
details and an application form please see our website
http://www.kcl.ac.uk/jobs or the AHDS department website
http://ahds.ac.uk/vacancies/index.htm or email [log in to unmask]
Alternatively send a large self -addressed envelope with the post
reference number clearly marked on the outside to the Personnel
Department, King's College London, James Clerk Maxwell Building, 57
Waterloo Road, London SE1 8WA. Please quote the relevant reference number
on all correspondence. Closing date: 17 October 2005. Equality of
opportunity is College policy
