Dear Mike,
Very interesting. Chris Kelland has just sent me details of the will of James Remfry, Mine Agent of St Austell (seemingly the one I'm after), written 1834 and proved in 1837. It names his sons, Joseph and Josiah, so it looks like your Josiah is James' son. The John Taylor connection is clearly very significant.
I will do some more research in Cornwall now - maybe even find his gravestone, which should provide genealogical info.
Thanks very much!
Robert
Robert,
Not really an answer to your question, but maybe related. The 1851 census
shows a Lead Mining Agent called Josiah Remfrey, from Tavistock, at
Cononley, near Skipton in Yorkshire. He was aged 37. By 1862, he was at
the Derwent Mines, near Blanchland, on the Durham-Northumberland border.
Both mines were run by John Taylor.
Regards,
Mike Gill
