Hi Dave,
I was wondering if your system could initiate transfers by
itself and show the files being moved in real time. If you
copy a couple of random gigabyte files around. It's less
sexy than the real thing but at least it shows it happening.
The better alternative is of course to persuade an existing
tool to publish live information so you can display that.
Also, Owen once suggested that you track some of the replicas.
If for example each copy has a specific colour then you could
visualise how some files are replicated (presumably) across
the UK and others aren't. You'd probably have to follow a
few interesting specimens, just like nature programs on tv :-)
Cheers,

Subject: Looking for dynamic things to monitor ...
Hi,
Gidon and two summer students have been working on putting together some
generic ways of monitoring activity across the Grid in a dynamic way and
displaying it graphically. This builds on sort of "flying jobs" applet
that we have had for some years now. All is well and good and they have
the techniques to be able to add new quantities to be monitored quite
quickly. The only problem is that we are having trouble finding things to
monitor dynamically. Yes, we have the jobs ... however the only other
thing that we could find was the PhEDEx file movements from CMS. Using the
information published in RGMA we can replay files being moved using gsiftp
at some point in the past as this information is only available after the
transfer has completed the display can never be "live".
So we are looking for things to monitor. Ideally we would like to be able
to access the information via RGMA or an updating webpage or direct access
to a database ... or any othr method that is reliable.
All ideas welcome and the sooner the better so that we can add them to the
collection in time for the AHM.
All the best,
david
