medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
You might want to join my list for Venetian scholars & ask this question
there. I can think of at least two people who might be able to help.

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Greetings to the list. I recently signed on and have been silently
browsing for a few weeks.
I would appreciate any advice members of the list might offer. I am a
musicology PhD candidate and my dissertation is a study of a collection
of sacred motets published in Venice by Barbara Strozzi in 1655.
Four of the motets are in praise of the BVM. One is a setting of the
standard "Salve Regina mater misericordie." A second cobbles together
texts from the Song of Songs and from Ecclesiaticus (with a couple
phrases thrown in that I cannot find sources for). The third seems to be
piecing together material from the "Ave Regina Caelorum" with segments
of the “Gaude Flore Virginali” and the "Memorare". For the fourth and
final text I have been unable to locate any substantial concordances
(there are isolated phrases from the Psalms and other sections of the
Vulgate, but these are fragmentary and most of the text seems newly
composed).
Why am I contacting the list? I have several questions and was hoping
that perhaps somebody in this group could point me to resources for answers.
1: As far as I can tell, the “Gaude Flore Virginali” is primarily found
in Sarum sources. Would these be commonly known/available in Venice in
the early 1600s?
2: The phrases from Ecclesiasticus seem to be those also found in the
"Little Office of the BVM." While I am having good luck searching online
Vulgates, Psalters, etc. I cannot find an online version of this text,
and I am only finding modern editions. Can somebody point me toward a
(preferably electronic) pre-1655 version of this text?
3: I am generally interested in knowing more about the Marian traditions
in Italy (obviously specifically in Venice) in the early 1600's can
anyone on the list point me to resources in this regard?
4: Finally, as I stated, the last text is APPARENTLY freely composed,
but I do not have the range of experience in these texts that this group
obviously does. May I post the text for all to comment upon? In fact,
perhaps I could post each of the four for your general comments?
Thank you in advance for your time in reading and responding to my
inquiries. I will happily take replies on or off list as protocol dictates.
