medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (24. August) is the feast day of:
Bartholomew (1st cent) Bartholomew was an apostle. Some
commentators identify him with the Nathanael who appears at the
beginning of John's gospel. Legend tells that after Pentecost B.
preached in India and then Armenia. He ended up flayed alive and
then beheaded. He's the patron saint of tanners, which is rather
disgusting in my humble opinion.
Audoenus (Ouen) (d. 684) Audoenus was a Frank, born near Soissons.
He was well educated and sent to the court of Clothar II; in time he
became Dagobert I's chancellor. A. received a grant of land from the
latter king to found the monastery of Rebais in 636, although he
himself remained at court until he became bishop of Rouen; he was
consecrated at the same time that his friend St. Eligius became
bishop of Noyon. As bishop, A. resolutely worked to stamp out the
remains of polytheism in his diocese.
George Limniotes (d. c. 730) George was a hermit on Mt. Olympus.
Like so many of his fellows, he protested Emperor Leo the Isaurian's
iconoclast policy and was executed, despite being a reputed 95 years
old.
