WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT METADATA
12 October 2005, Swindon
Metadata is being recognised as a core skill for LIS professionals arising from cataloguing, indexing and library management practice. Many library and information professionals are being called on to work in areas such as web content management, knowledge management and records management where their information handling and management skills need to be deployed.
This one-day workshop is designed to introduce the concepts and terminology of metadata and to equip participants with an understanding of metadata as it relates to library and information work in a wider context. The course also shows how current thinking on metadata will affect cataloguing practice in the future.
BENEFITS FROM ATTENDING
This workshop will help participants to understand the principles of metadata and its core relevance to library and information work. Throughout the day exercises, demonstrations and discussions will provide a practical focus.
BY THE END OF THE EVENT PARTICIPANTS WILL HAVE:
* a definition of metadata
* identified the relationship between metadata and cataloguing
* discussed the concepts behind metadata and its terminology
* examined examples of metadata at work
* explored ways in which metadata has an impact on library and information work.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Experienced cataloguers & library and information professionals who are deploying their skills in new areas, or who are responsible for managing cataloguing departments.
WORKSHOP LEADER: DAVID HAYNES
David has been a library and information consultant for 20 years during which he has developed expertise in metadata. His recommendations to the Cabinet Office in 2000 led to the establishment of the Working Group on Metadata and the eventual establishment of the e-Government Metadata Standard. His book Metadata for Information Management & Retrieval is included in the price.
