World systems theory posits a universalizing and hence, blurring of
distinctions between western oriented technologies and benefits as they
accrue to other countries around the world. The codicil to this is that it
is also true that the west benefits from the complexities and understandings
regarding different cultures sharing with each other. India is a case in
point as historically it represents such a unique cultural mix. I had
thought that India was developing a complex digital infrastructure that
would leap-frog older technologies putting it in an enviable position
regarding advanced technological systems. The fact that I am communicating
with you on a direct and individual level suggests to me that something of
the above must be happening. Perhaps, what is happening is the old story of
elites communicating with elites though, I must admit, I don't feel like an
elite at all. The nation-state concept has always seemed to me quite
wasteful in terms of the historical way it allocated its resources and
*punished* some geographical areas to the benefit of others. Globalization
is not all negative. We are sharing on an individual basis which seems to me
a wonderfully unique thing. Individuals are now beginning to take this sort
of thing for granted. Does that make sense?

Believe me, I want to attend a workshop on digital writing but there
is none in India that I am aware of. Hence I shall try and attend one
in UK, US, Australia or Canada. Maybe someone on this list can point
me to one.
BTW, what had you thought *further along* about India?

It was a good rant and was surprisingly interesting. I had thought India
further along than that. Wait, what about cell phones? India's tremendous
literary heritage not being digitally archived? I find that hard to believe.
Seriously? cheers, scott malby
