Hi Nigel,
I too am getting interested in the use of blogs alongside (or within?) a
VLE. I don't know WebCT, but there's been an interesting debate over on
moodle.org about exactly how to integrate blogs into that VLE for the
forthcoming 1.6 release - have a glance at the thread in
http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=27338 .
FWIW, I'm tending to the view of blogs as standalone tools with a
broader focus, whilst keeping the VLE to narrower course-related stuff,
but it's early days for us here.
I'd be interested to hear of any academic research done on blogs in
educational settings, and of recomendations of which blog software to
use. I'm impressed by elgg's integration of blogs, portfolios and social
networking, but feel that the interface perhaps lacks the elegance of
tools like wordpress.
Miles.
