Hi Don -- I managed to contact Vincent Carey and he is very interested indeed in
becoming a plenary speaker for the QEI society in Houston -- he is willing to do
without honorarium or airfare expenses, but he would like to have his hotel room
paid for (and I presume he won't have to pay conference registration fees?). He will
be blowing his entire year's travel budget simply on getting to Houston... the paper
he will give was originally scheduled for a conference in England on "Queen
Elizabeth and terrorism" but he is cancelling that and willing to give it to us
instead. His proposed title:
"The Theory and Practice of State Terror: Elizabeth and the Elizabethans in
Ireland."
He's willing to adjust the title slightly, esp. to remove the word "terror", if you feel
it inappropriate somehow.
What do you say? Can the QE I society or SCRC spring for his hotel for 2 nights?
I would love to seem him there. He is extremely dynamic and a solid scholar with
many good publications and connections. I would auction off my left foot to hear
him in Houston.
I am also organizing another panel on Irish issues and will bring in Spenserian
Judith Owens and Tom Finan (archaeologist) and Valerie McGowan-Doyle
(historian) for that. Also, the panel I'm organizing on "Literature and Materialism"
will have Heather Dubrow and me and I dunno yet. Maybe Jean Brink? You?
Best wishes, Thomas
