2. WELSH ASSEMBLY GOVERNMENT
Written Questions to the Minister for Culture, Welsh Language and Sport
http://tinyurl.com/74rp3
2.1 Nick Bourne: Will the Minister make a statement on celebrations in Wales
to mark the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar? (WAQ43542)
Alun Pugh: The National Waterfront Museum Swansea will open on 17 October
2005, during Trafalgar Week. This major event within the SeaBritain 2005
Festival, a year-long series of events around the UK coastline, waterways
and islands (www.seabritain2005.com) inspired by the anniversary of Nelson's
victory at Trafalgar, will be followed by a special exhibition looking at
the life and achievements of Admiral Lord Nelson.
There are a number of events planned throughout the year to celebrate the
bicentenary, including Cyfarthfa Castle Museum, Monmouth Nelson Museum,
Cardiff Bay, Merthyr Tydfil, Pembrokeshire, Anglesey, Vale of Glamorgan and
Carmarthenshire.
2.2 Lynne Neagle: Will the Minister make a statement on how the Assembly
Government is supporting the World Heritage Site in Blaenavon? (WAQ43658)
Alun Pugh: The Welsh Assembly Government supports Blaenavon in many
different ways, including, through Cadw and the Royal Commission on the
Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales, the provision of expert advice in
the preparation of the World Heritage status bid. This expert advice and the
provision of financial support continues in marketing and infrastructure
developments, the conservation and promotion of the Ironworks site and
through financial aid for projects such as Big Pit and the restoration of St
Peters Church and former school.
2.3 Lisa Francis: Will the Minister make a statement on the 'Treasures of
Wales' scheme? (WAQ43664)
Alun Pugh: Cyfoeth Cymru Gyfan/Sharing Treasures was launched as a pilot
scheme in 2002. It aims to assist local museums across Wales to establish
partnerships with the National Museums & Galleries of Wales (NMGW):
facilitate loans of items from NMGW collections: and to deliver a range of
exhibitions and other services from the NMGW at a local level. The pilot was
originally administered by the Council of Museums in Wales (CMW). In 2004-05
administration passed to CyMAL: Museums Archives Libraries Wales.
The three original pilot sites were chosen by CMW to reflect the
distribution and also the capacity of local museums to participate - Wrexham
Museum, Brecknock Museum Brecon, and Oriel Ynys Mon Museum. In 2004-05 two
additional sites already working with the NMGW were added to complete the
geographical distribution - Carmarthenshire County Museum and Pontypool
Museum.
2005-06 sees the end of the successful pilot phase, after which the scheme
will be mainstreamed within the CyMAL museums grants programme.
2.4 Lisa Francis: Will the Minister make a statement on how many works of
art are currently being circulated around Wales under the 'Treasures of
Wales' scheme? (WAQ43666)
Alun Pugh: The National Museums & Galleries of Wales lends objects from the
national collection to venues across the world. Under the Sharing Treasures
scheme, over 120 objects have been loaned to the five pilot sites.
In 2005-06, further loans will take the figure to 180 items and will include
geological specimens to Carmarthen County Museum, Peter Prendergast
paintings to Oriel Ynys Mon, and archaeological material to Wrexham Museum.

4.6 Charities Aid Foundation
http://www.cafonline.org/grants/
1 May 2005 - 30 April 2006
The CAF Grant Programme reflects both the mission and activities of CAF.
Its objective is to support the development of small to medium-sized
charitable organisations. We do this by providing expertise to diversify
funding streams and by offering funding to cover core costs.
Consultancy Fund
This fund has been set up for charitable organisations that
do not have a chosen consultant, that have identified a need for
consultancy, and may need extra guidance and support to achieve the best
possible results from their consultancy.
Collaborative Fund
CAF aims to work in collaboration with up to fifteen
organisations this year.
Funding priorities
We want to support initiatives where both the organisations share
our mission to increase effective giving. You could be:
* a membership or umbrella groups who wish to improve the
effectiveness of not-for-profit members (with specific focus on groups with
less access to support structures for their own development and/or increased
support for their own development)
* working in the area of social investment and developing new funding
sources for the sector
* promoting and developing the understanding of individual and
corporate giving, including research and advocacy
* a grantmaker that would like to work collaboratively

The UK's cultural heritage today received a huge boost with the news that
the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) is backing three national museums to the
tune of £38million. The recipients of this Lottery money - the Museum of
London, the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) and the National Museums of
Scotland - will all undergo major transformations in time for the London
Olympic and Paralympic Games and the massive increase of visitors expected
in 2012.
