Call for Papers:
The Robert Grosseteste Society is sponsoring two sessions at the Forty-first International Medieval Congress, Kalamazoo
1. Grosseteste's Influence in Medieval Thought
Grosseteste was a polymath's whose ideas and writings had an impact in philosophy, theology, the transmission of classical sources, science, politics and the pastoral care. We welcome abstracts for papers that trace the influence of one or more of his ideas or texts. Papers that examine Grosseteste's influence in Latin or vernacular literature are also encouraged.
2. Bishops and their Households, 1100-1300
Grosseteste was part of a changing program of episcopal practice, one that included careful attention to reforming the (pastoral) duties of priests, deacons and bishops. How these bishops executed this reform program was connected to how they selected their advisors and assistants of the episcopal familia. We welcome abstracts of papers that focus on the general theory and practice of medieval episcopal administration; or how members of a bishop's household contributed to relations amongst bishops, archbishops, the papal court, monasteries or secular authorities. Any and all methodological approaches are encouraged, including (but not limited to) legal studies, institutional history, literary representations, and theological analysis. Papers that examine Grosseteste's own episcopacy are especially encouraged but we wish to structure a session that examines other episcopal models and narratives as well.
Please submit a one-page abstract by 15 September 2005, including name, institutional affiliation and contact details to:
