medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Suzanne
Giles Constable discusses the difficulties of dating the change in meaning
of the term 'vita apostolica' ('As the Middle Ages progressed the term
imtiatio Christi, like vita apostolica and paupertas, taook on new meanings
without entirely losing its old ones, and it would be impossible to say
exactly when it lose one meaning and assumed another.') in his essay, 'the
Ideal of the Imitation of Christ' which is one of his _Three Studies in
Medieval religious and Social Thought_ (Cambridge Uni press, 1995). I
think you may find this essay helpful,
with best wishes, Cate

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Listmembers,
I am a graduate student working on an article that involves the origins of
the vita apostolica and emerging emphasis on the active life and
preaching. So far, I'm citing two sources, Caroline Bynum's "The
Spirituality of Regular Canons in the Twelfth Century," (1982) and M.-D.
Chenu's "Monks, Canons, and Laymen in Search of the Apostolic Life"
(1968). Bynum gives a framework of 1050-1215 for the emergence of the
vita apostolica, and Chenu argues it takes hold later in the 12th
century. Does anyone know of more recent scholarship on the timeframe of
the emergence of the apostolic life, or any scholarship that indicates
that medieval calls to follow the apostolic life were centered on
preaching? I'd be grateful for any info. on this topic.
Thank you,
Suzanne LaVere
