There are still places available on this half-day taster on classifying
sound recording.
The day looks at the French system for classifying sound recordings. This is
an effective system which takes cognizance of the particular nature of the
recorded item - with its preponderance of anthologies. It provides a more
detailed coverage of both classical and non-classical (jazz, rock, world
etc) music than any other system we have seen. The creators of the system
have looked at how record shops handle this material and at how users want
to browse. The result is a very flexible system: it can be made as detailed
or as broad as you wish; you can make some areas detailed and others broad.
The notation uses 3-digit classmarks which can be made to look compatible
with Dewey-style numbers - though they are not related to Dewey.
This half-day session will
* Explore the basis of the system
* Look at how to create numbers for different types of material
* Consider different options for dealing with anthologies
* Consider the ways in which the system can be customised
