I agree largely with James and Juan's comments about the DC and DM blogs. To
return to the original question of the Wiki, the answer is in two parts.
(1) I think many of the arguments about the Blog having different audiences are
also true for the Wiki, although perhaps less so. I would still argue that, in
the short term at least, we still need two Wikis. (Or at least two
front-ends?)
(2) On the other hand, there will be many materials in both Wikis that are
equally of interest to both constituencies. We could simply repeat this
information, I suppose; we could simply point to the guides / FAQs in one
another's Wikis. Or there may be a more sophisticated way to share this data,
by dynamically mirroring XML files, vel sim., which would also allow entries to
be indexed in both Wikis. This is probably the point at which someone with
better knowledge of Wiki software than I needs to pile into the discussion...
So, some questions to this mythical Wiki expert:
• Is this kind of utopian sharing that we are talking about in fact usefully
achievable?
• Does the fact that DC are using xWiki (remotely hosted), and DM are using
MediaWiki (installed on the local server) cause problems for this kind of
sharing?
• If so, and if we decide to move the DC Wiki onto a MediaWiki or similar
platform (not the end of the world), is there any platform for remotely hosting
such a Wiki, or would we have to install the software? (In which case we
wouldn't be able to do this overnight...)
And a question for everyone else:
• Does this all sound like a good idea? Are we doing too much? Too little?
(I've been meaning to start talking about Wiki content soon, also, but perhaps
everyone's away on their summer holiday at the moment...)
Best,
G
