Dear List,
This is the final reminder before I go and get muddy, that an
archaeological excavation will be taking place at Morwellham Quay
Industrial Museum near Tavistock on National Archaeology Week, 16th-24th July.
We will be excavating a plateway of 1816-17, hopefully with two turntable
pits and the foot of an inclined plane, which hauled trucks of limestone
and coal up to the top of a limekiln.
We also intend to clean out and record the river dock of the Tavistock
Canal Company, hopefully gaining new information about its construction and
use, from artefacts which have fallen into it.
List members are welcome to come and visit us, and even to participate.
Call Robert on 01822 832766 or email [log in to unmask] from
Saturday onwards.
The museum is well worth a visit, for its displays charting the mining and
trading history of the locality in the 18th and 19th centuries. Its
website is www.morwellham-quay.co.uk
Hope to see you there!
Robert Waterhouse, Morwellham Quay Archaeologist
