In response to Andrew's query, I will describe the room I have seen. Whether
or not it is innovative, is for everyone to decide.
It is an ICT/Business Studies room in an Academy in the North of England.
The teacher area at the front of the room contains the usual interactive
whiteboard, PC etc. However, the pupil area is raised in a series of steps -
like auditorium seating. When facing the front, puipls have a small bench in
front of them for notbooks, papers etc. The computer monitors and keyboards
are positioned behind the pupils who swing their chairs round to use the
computers. This means that attention is either focussed on the teacher at the
front, or on the computers, not both at the same time. When the pupils are
using the computers, the teacher can see all monitors from the position at the
front and there is space for hiom/her to move along the rows behind the
pupils.
This will not suit all methodologies, of course but the teachers I have seen
using it are delighted with it.
