Dear List
Some members may well be aware of a gentleman who wrote a book
that was only printed by a library service in Devon some years back. The
book 'The Metal Mines of the Plympton District' (if that is its correct
title) was written by a gentleman called Bert Shorten. Bert is a very
active member of the Devon Mining Club and has asked me if I would place a
listing for information on a steam engine that was erected at Bottle Hill
Mine.
Does anyone know or have any information on the steam-engine that was
erected in May 1852 at Bottle Hill Mine. It was manufactured at Tavistock,
Devon, designed by Hocking & Loam of a 50-inch cylinder, and apparently of
a unique design especially for the conditions of Strode's Shaft. Notable
Mining Men of that time did not think that this newly erected engine would
work, but, it worked perfectly. It apparently worked for about two years
before the mine reverted back to water-power. Any information regarding
the sale or where the engine went too would be very much appreciated by
Bert. You may respond through me as Secretary of the Devon Mining Club.
Thank you in anticipation of any responses.
Regards Chris Kelland.
