medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (10. July) is the feast day of:
Rufina and Secunda (c. 250) These two martyrs probably died during
the reign of Valerian. Legend tells that they were Roman sisters,
who refused to apostasize along with their fiances when the
persecution began. They fled from Rome, but were denounced by their
former suitors. There was a church over their tomb (at the tenth
milestone from Rome on the Cornelian Way) by the fourth century; the
town of Silva Candida grew up around it.
Amalburga (d. c. 770) Amalburga became a nun at Munsterbilzen
(modern Belgium) at a young age. A cute legend tells that she was
amazingly beautiful and Pepin the Short wanted her to marry his son
Charles (the future Great); Charles is supposed to have attempted to
carry her off from a church where she had taken sanctuary by force,
and to have broken one of her arms in the process.
Antony and Theodosius Pechersky (d. 1073 and 1074) A and T weren't
related--"Pechersky" comes from the Caves monastery of Kiev---the
Kiev-Pecierskaya Lavra, where they both served as abbot. Antony
founded the monastery; Theodosius was one of his first disciples.
Both played a vital role in establishing Russian Orthodox monasticism.
Cnut of Denmark (d. 1086) Cnut was a bastard son of Svein
Estrithson. He became king of Denmark in 1080 and proved to be a
strong supporter of the young Danish church, building churches,
endowing monasteries, making favorable laws, etc. The people didn't
like it. They rebelled against his heavy taxes and tithes. C was
besieged in Odense, where he took refuge in a church. The rebels
broke in and killed C and 18 of his followers. A cult started
immediately and was approved in 1101. His feast day used to be 19.
January but he actually died on this date.
