Thanks, Jeff. I think you add an important aspect to the evil/good debate.
Might it be that 'we' - our way of life (as Mr Blair likes to call it
frequently) - are part of the systemisation of a certain kind of evil?
What's happening in Iraq (yes, it's ongoing) is not only that every day
dozens of civilians and soldiers are slaughtered; we also have a ruthless
neo-liberalisation and Westernisation of the Iraqi economy going on that
puts thousands of people out of work, not to mention the literally billions
of dollars that Western multi-nationals put into their coffers.

Naomi Klein has written numerous reports on the corporate involvement in the
evil going on in Iraq. See, e.g.
http://auto_sol.tao.ca/node/view/855
See also http://www.radicalactivist.net/corporateiraq.shtml

One of her points is that the way neo-liberalism has been implemented in
Iraq has undoubtedly contributed to the massive amount of so-called
insurgent activity and it's multiple killings (just today at least 25
children have been killed). And as analyses of the London atrocities are
slowly becoming a bit more rational, commentators now frequently point out
that the Iraq war is one of the reasons why British youth have become
radicalised. Our 'deconstructive' efforts should thus be able to make the
connections between multi-national corporations, neo-liberalist governments
in the US and the UK, thousands of death in Iraq and the atrocities in
London.

Me too, Jeff, I hope that we remember these connections when we attend mass
vigils in the coming days.

Thanks - it is good to see that the Iraq bombings are also the subject of
protest, although we would need more than Thursday and Saturday to remember
more than 100,000 dead at the hands of our troops... Jeff

	London bombings: Remembering the victims
Upcoming vigils and events in response to the bombings of 7th July

	THURSDAY 14 JULY

The Mayor of London, in partnership with the TUC and community
groups,
has called for a series of events in London:

AT NOON, millions of Londoners will observe 2 minutes' silence.
Every
bus in the city will stop, businesses will stop and people are asked
to
come out of their workplaces and homes onto the streets of London to
remember those who died and to show their complete defiance of the
	terrorists.

AT 1PM, books of condolences will be opened in Trafalgar Square for
all
Londoners and visitors to the city to sign.

AT 6PM, Londoners are invited to a vigil in Trafalgar Square to
remember
those who died and to thank the heroes of transport and emergency
services who saved so many lives last Thursday.

Peace group Justice Not Vengeance <http://www.j-n-v.org> (JNV) is
calling on anti-war activists to form a silent peace section at this
vigil and is asking anti-war activists to come with white armbands,
and
no banners, to immediately in front of the National Gallery facing
Trafalgar Square, at 6pm. (Mobile on the day: 07980 748 555).

	Information in advance: 01424 428 792. www.j-n-v.org

	SUNDAY 17TH JULY

London: London Solidarity Gathering, 2pm, Sunday 17th July, Russell
Square. In solidarity with the families of the dead and injured and
in
opposition to the racism and Islamophobia which have resulted since
Thursday's attacks. Jointly organised by Stop the War Coalition and
the
Muslim Association of Britain. Download PDF flyer at
www.stopwar.org.uk

Manchester: 'United in Grief - United for Peace'. Vigil to remember
the
victims of the London bombings. Sunday 17th July, 12.00 noon, Peace
Gardens (next to Manchester Town Hall). Please bring rainbow peace
flags
and wear armbands bearing the message of Peace. This vigil has been
organised by a coalition of faith communities across the North West.
Supported by Manchester & District CND and Greater Manchester
Coalition
	to Stop the War.

Islam is not to blame: Suggestions for a Muslim solidarity vigil

Justice Not Vengeance <http://www.j-n-v.org> is proposing that at
lunchtime on Friday 16 July or some other Friday, anti-war groups
hold
silent vigils outside mosques and Muslim community venues to
remember
those who have suffered and who are suffering in the London
bombings,
and in the wider 'war on terror', and to express our solidarity with
	Muslims.

JNV suggest beginning the vigil at 1pm, lasting till 2pm. Prayers
start
	at 1.15pm.

	Resources from Justice Not Vengeance

	Pressuring the media
JNV has inaugurated a project to send rapid-rebuttal letters to the
papers to counter the barrage of propaganda in the media's
commentary on
the London bombings eg. responding to those who deny the link
between
British foreign policy and the willingness of some Muslims to
	participate in anti-Western terrorism. See

http://www.j-n-v.org/London_Blasts/L_B_rapid_rebuttal_letter-writing.htm.

	Media review
JNV is also providing a daily Review of the broadsheets media
coverage
of the bombings and their aftermath. Recent articles include:
'Answering
Aaronovitch' and 'How the British newspapers misrepresent the nature
of
	the threat'. See www.j-n-v.org <http://www.j-n-v.org>.

Counter Terror Build Justice DVD (20 mins)
Produced by JNV and written and directed by activist and author
Milan
Rai (Chomsky's Politics, War Plan Iraq, Regime Unchanged) - and
featuring Bruce Kent, as well as a host of Vox Pops ' CTBJ explains
clearly why the UK Government's 'war on terror' is not only wrong
but is
actually endangering UK citizens. By showing how al-Qaeda draws upon
legitimate grievances to create a reservoir of support, it also
indicates what a real 'counter-terrorism' strategy, draining that
	reservoir, would actually involve.

Available for £6.50 incl. p&p from Voices in the Wilderness UK:
Voices
UK, 5 Caledonian Rd, London N1 9DX. Cheques should be made payable
to
	'Voices in the Wilderness UK.'

'Muslims say peace be upon you' badges
Salaam Aleikum is Arabic for 'peace be upon you', and is the
standard
greeting used by Muslims. JNV have designed this badge for both
non-Muslims and Muslims to wear, to help dispel fear of Islam:
	* 10 badges for £4.00 + 50p p&p.
	* 20 for £8.00 postage free.
A copy of the badge can be viewed on-line at www.j-n-v.org
	<http://www.j-n-v.org>.

You can email JNV ([log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]>) with your
order and address, and send a cheque at the same time made out to
'JNV',
to JNV, 29 Gensing Road, St Leonards on Sea, East Sussex, TN38 0HE.
