i think sri has mad a very good point. i did occur to me that localization
at this time could affect development in a number of ways. but following on
from this thread (and live8 etc)... what will be the impact upon climate
change if we raise the living standards across the world according to what
the west has been accustomed to...i.e. vast amounts of consumption, demands
for fossil fuels, goods, materials, cars and so on. i think an article in
the new statesman touched on this recently, declaring that if the chinese
population lived as we do, you would need a second planet of resources, not
to mention the impact upon the environment. and as this is crisis-forum, and
not just about CC, resource scarcity is a big issue. do we have the right to
preach to others that must not enjoy the benefits we have had? so, with
regards to development, what are people's thoughts...
lastly, could C&C be applied to how we consume and to out economic and
cultural structure. so we gradually reduce expectations and consumption in
our lives (like this 'right' to travel that we are all informed is ours, the
right to choice, low prices and convenience in our food and shopping) whilst
others in developing countries can improve their standards of living and we
meet at some point whereby we are living sustainably?
thoughts please.....
apologies if this isn't overly coherent - too much physics on the brain!
