Quite. As far as I could ever tell, my parents had a lovely war, in the
most literal non-ironic sense you might imagine.

I can't comment on the issues Chris raised but I can assure you that at
least one of the veterans interviewed isn't sanitising it. I was on
site
yesterday and she was telling us about dodging firewatching duty, being
party to the V2 impact and being in the hospital after, as well as
"assisting" GIs acquire local knowledge - "well, they had the dosh and
we
had the know-how!".
How the archaeology will go remains to be seen but it looks good, and it
was
only day 1.
Cheers

But doesn't this indicate something disturbing about community
archaeology - that it is has been sanitised. While I wouldn't
necessarily argue that the book should be used in the fieldwork, this
project sounds like it has the potential to allow a community to explore
a broader and more interesting past than that which has been presented
to them. It would be sad if that past had to have the same moral
character as the history based accounts.
all the best

Although what would happen when the guardians of public morality in
the
gutter press got hold of the notion that a book featuring serious drug
use
and S & M, not to mention Slothrop's encounter with Bianca, was involved
in
a community archaeology project is, frankly, too appalling to
contemplate
