Your data will go through multiple computers/routers on its way. Each
one providing a chance for scrutiny. If the data is encrypted (like
it typically is when you do credit card transactions on the web --
https) then it can be looked at but not understood.
Sending data over the internet is like sending postcards in the mail.
Encryption is like putting it in a tamperproof sealed envelope.
