Hello colleagues,
Forthcoming fieldtrip: "Folds, fabrics and kinematic criteria in
rheomorphic ignimbrites of the Snake River Plain, Idaho: insights into
emplacement and flow". Led by Graham Andrews and Mike Branney (Department
of Geology, University of Leicester, UK), and cosponsored by GSA Structural
Geology & Tectonics Division. This 4-day (3 night) post-conference field trip will
run 19th - 22nd October 2005, after the annual GSA meeting in Salt Lake
City, Utah.
The trip is aimed for structural geologists with interests in ductile shear
zones, and also for physical volcanologists with interests in lava flow
emplacement and rheomorphism. It provides an unrivalled opportunity to
examine a host of ductile and semi-brittle deformation structures in what
was an extensive 50 m-thick sheet of hot glass emplaced across
graben-topography during a large rhyolitic explosive volcanic eruption.
Transport from Salt Lake City will be by mini-van to a hotel base at
Jackpot, NV, where we will work out of each day, keeping travelling
to a minimum to maximise time at a small number of spectacular exposures
with curvilinear folds, sheath folds, and refolded folds. Max: 24; min: 10.
Cost: US$225
